Do you have a really out of shape friend who likes to give out health advice?
Or a totally broke friend who’s quick to share investing tips?
Prefer to listen? Check out the podcast: [smart_track_player url=”http://traffic.libsyn.com/modernmarketingminute/The_most_expensive_advice_youll_ever_receive.mp3″ ]
Or a family member who’s never been outside their home state yet is real quick to weigh in on foreign policy or international affairs?
I know I do!
And man did it ever used to bother me!
I remember getting into a heated debate (borderline fisticuffs! K not really that bad but I’ve always enjoyed that word and so I use it when I can… fisticuffs)
Anyway.
I remember getting into a borderline fisticuff match with my roommate’s friend back in college (this is going to sound trivial now I know…) but it was about a guitar playing technique.
Here’s the thing.
The dude didn’t play guitar!!!
But the point of this is not to bash or tout the benefits or drawbacks of one guitar technique or another.
Rather…
It’s to bring to light the DANGEROUS act of taking advice from someone who is by no means qualified to offer such advice.
And yet it happens all the time.
And ESPECIALLY in marketing.
Where everyone with a Facebook account can call themselves an expert and get to work running ruining other peoples businesses.
Which REALLY makes my blood boil (I feel a fisticuff match coming on…)
Because as fun as marketing can be…
It’s also serious business.
With businesses and livelihoods at stake.
So what is the most expensive advice you’ll ever receive?
Bad advice.
Because bad advice that will most certainly cost you in the short term…
But more frighteningly, is also likely to seriously damage your business, reputation, and ability to grow in the long run too.
Be careful who you listen to. Guard your ears. And protect your eyes.
If in doubt… RUN!
